Who Is Sheikh Rashid? 20-Year-Old Youngster Starting Over Devon Conway

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acquired Sheikh Rashid during the 2023 IPL auction, but he did not play in any of the matches that year.

In an effort to reverse their rollercoaster performance this season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) took some drastic lineup changes. Devon Conway and R. Ashwin were left out of the playing XI, and 20-year-old Sheikh Rashid was given his much-awaited IPL debut – indicating Dhoni’s faith in new blood.

Who is Sheikh Rashid?

Sheikh Rashid is from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. He started playing cricket in Dilsukhnagar, Hyderabad, playing for Sportive Cricket Club in the HCA League. His break came in 2022 when he was picked to play for India’s Under-19 side and appointed as vice-captain of the U-19 World Cup team.

Although he missed some of the tournament through COVID-19, Rashid left an imposing mark – registering 201 runs in as few as four matches. He delivered two pivotal innings: a 94-run inning in the semi-final and an important half-century in the final, with which India won the U-19 World Cup.

Overall, he had 297 runs in six innings with a striking average of 59.40, including three fifties.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained Rashid in the 2023 IPL auction, but he did not play any matches that year. He kept doing well in local tournaments, particularly the Andhra Premier League in 2024. Before Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) still had faith in him and purchased him for Rs 30 lakh in the mega auction, finally providing him with an opportunity to prove himself on the big stage.
