Who is Ayush Mhatre? CSK’s new Joine in mid Season Trial

Ayush Mhatre, who went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega-auction in Jeddah in November, can join the Chennai Super Kings in the event of a season-ending injury to a player.

The Chennai Super Kings, who suffered defeats in two of their three IPL 2025 games, have summoned up 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre for mid-season trials, reported to The Times of India.

Mhatre flew south from Rajkot, where he was attending the BCCI National Cricket Academy’s zonal training for U-19 players.

“Yes, we have called him for trials. He’s pleased our talent scouts. No (injuries); if necessary, we will do so. “We are not picking anyone; this is just a trial,” Chennai managing director Kasi Viswanathan told The Times of India.

The team has also summoned Mhatre to report for trials in November, right before the IPL 2025 mega-auction.

Mhatre last appeared in action in February, during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy semifinal match against Vidarbha in Nagpur, when he made nine and 18 runs in two innings.

Mhatre was Mumbai’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, with 471 runs in eight matches, including two hundreds.

Mhatre also made a match-winning century against Saurashtra in a Vijay Hazare Trophy group game in January, ending as Mumbai’s leading run-scorer in the competition with 458 runs in seven matches at a staggering average of 65.42.

Mhatre is yet set for his T20 debut for Mumbai or any other franchise, but he has pleased Chennai’s senior management and team talent scouts.

With a win over archrivals Mumbai Indians and two losses in three games, Chennai is ranked eighth in the IPL 2025 points list.

Mhatre set a new global record in December by becoming the youngest player to hit 150+ runs in men’s List A cricket during a VHT game against Nagaland, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Mhatre achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 168 days, while Jaiswal did so at the age of 17 years and 291 days, while also representing Mumbai against Jharkhand six years ago.
