Vaibhav Suryavanshi Named Bihar Vice-Captain for Ranji Trophy 2025-26 Season

In an exciting development ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named vice-captain of the Bihar cricket team. The team will be led once again by the experienced batter Sakibul Gani as they seek to rebuild after a disappointing season last year.

The season begins on 15 October, with Bihar playing the first match against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna, then travel to Nadiad to play Manipur on 25 October.

Bihar’s Cricket Team Gets a Leadership Change Right Before the Ranji Trophy

Just two days before the season started, the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) scrambled to pick the team’s leaders. This happened because the BCCI told the BCA to get a five-person selection panel together since they had only been using two selectors.

To get the team leadership sorted out quickly, they brought in a selector just for the short term. This shows the BCA wants to get things organized and set a course for the future. Especially after a bad season in 2024-25.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Meteoric Rise Through the Ranks

Considering Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s outstanding performance for India Under-19 in the first part of this year, his promotion to the senior squad is a foregone conclusion. The young right-hander attracted attention on the Australia tour, where he blazed a 78-ball century during the first four-day game in Brisbane. He thus became the second-highest run-getter in the multi-day series with 133 runs in 3 innings and also played a major role in India’s 2-0 series win.

Earlier in England, he came into the limelight worldwide when he scored 143 runs from just 82 balls in Worcester, establishing the quickest century in youth one-dayers. His overall performance in five matches was phenomenal as he accumulated 355 runs at 174.01 strike rate and went up the India run charts by a significant margin.

Interestingly, he is also a 14-year-old boy but he has already shown the traits of a veteran player – fighting off balls aggressively yet maintaining his remarkable consistency.

Historic Accomplishments at A Young Age

Suryavanshi’s journey has certainly enchanted not only Indian cricket fans but cricket aficionados around the world. Earlier this year, he made history when the Rajasthan Royals selected him with the youngest player ever in IPL history (at just 13 years of age) for the 2025 season. He then made more history, becoming the youngest centurion in a men’s T20 match scoring 101 runs in just 38 balls against the Gujarat Titans in Jaipur.

In seven IPL appearances, he made 252 runs with a blistering strike rate of 206.55 showing he excels in high-pressure high-level sports.

While his first-class career is early; he has played just five matches (his debut match at 12 years and 284 days), based on Suryavanshi’s IPL and international records, it shows he could be on the precipice of a remarkable cricket career.
