Rohit Sharma Nears Historic Feat in ODIs – Set to Surpass Sachin Tendulkar in Champions Trophy Clash
As India face New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium, Rohit Sharma is on the brink of changing the history of ODI cricket. He requires 68 runs to be overtaken by Sachin Tendulkar and become the sixth-highest Indian run-scorer in ODIs.
Though there has been no serious knockout for Rohit so far, he has provided fast starts for the Indian batting order. With the form he has shown, something is bound to click pretty soon.
Rohit had gone through a very hard process with the Test format, but a return to ODIs has lifted him, putting him well on track, owing to which he had confidence with his batting.
Rohit Sharma vs. Sachin Tendulkar – Most Runs as Indian Captain in ODIs
Rohit Sharma has been one of India’s best ODI captains, having scored 2387 runs in only 53 ODIs, with an average of 53.04 and impressively high strike rate of 113.18.
Sachin Tendulkar, who captained India in 73 ODIs, made 2454 runs at an average of 37.75, with 6 centuries and 12 fifties. But if Rohit should manage another 68 runs, he would then have displaced Sachin Tendulkar to occupy the elite seat in the highest run-getters’ list in ODIs as captain of India.
Most Runs by Indian Captains in ODIs:
MS Dhoni – 6641 runs from 200 matches
Virat Kohli – 5449 runs from 95 matches
Mohammad Azharuddin – 5239 runs from 174 matches
Sourav Ganguly – 5082 runs from 146 matches
Rahul Dravid – 2658 runs from 79 matches
Sachin Tendulkar – 2454 runs from 73 matches
Rohit Sharma – 2387 runs from 53 matches (and counting!)
Rohit’s ability to score at a rapid strike rate makes him a lethal threat, especially in ICC tournaments. With India playing a crucial match against New Zealand, the stage is perfectly set for Rohit to achieve this milestone.
Will Rohit Sharma Play Against New Zealand?
Concerns instilled over Rohit Sharma’s fitness after the player slipped a hamstring on the night when India played Pakistan. It was alleged that India was likely to rest him for the nearly-interminable match against New Zealand in an effort to stave off any further injuries.
However, India’s associate coach turned up decidingly, confirming that Rohit was now fully fit and available for selection, which would be a big plus for the Indian team, given that the player is very important at the top of the order in big matches.
