History was made at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on September 1, 2025, when UAE captain Muhammad Waseem re-wrote the T20I record books against Afghanistan. Although the UAE lost the match, Waseem’s furious knock meant his name would be forever etched into cricketing history, as he broke Rohit Sharma’s six-hitting record as T20I captain.

Muhammad Waseem Just Beat Rohit Sharma as the King of Sixes

Waseem had an awesome inning of 67 runs off 37 balls, hitting six MASSIVE sixes. That broke Rohit Sharma’s old record of 105 sixes as a T20I captain.

Muhammad Waseem’s record-breaker was against Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the third over.

  • Now he’s got 110 sixes in 54 games as the UAE’s captain.
  • It took Rohit 62 games to get his 105 sixes when he was captain.
  • Get this: No other T20I captain has even hit 100 sixes!

Out of current captains, Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza is the next closest but still way behind with only 59 sixes in 42 games.

Muhammad Waseem Climbs T20I Six-Hitting Ladder – Past Guptill, Chasing Rohit

In addition, Waseem proceeded to the T20I six-hitters chart.

He brought 176 sixes in 80 Twenty20 international matches.

Therefore, he is the second player to be the most six-hitting batsmen, after Martin Guptill (173 in 122 matches) who stayed in third position.

The only batsman that Waseem is yet to surpass is Rohit Sharma, who has blasted 205 sixes in 159 games.

Waseem is truly capable to break the record of Rohit if he decides to keep hitting sixes at this rate and with UAE scheduled to play more matches in 2025.

Waseem edges out Rohit, Williamson in Fifty-Plus Scores

The UAE captain accomplished another milestone too. His score of 67 against Afghanistan was also the 17th T20I fifty-plus score, moving ahead of Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson (each has 16 fifty-plus scores).

The tally of captains with the most fifty-plus scores in T20I’s is:

  • Babar Azam – 26
  • Muhammad Waseem – 17
  • Rohit Sharma – 16
  • Kane Williamson – 16

Waseem becomes one of the more consistent batting captains in T20I history.

UAE Takes Another Hit in Tri-Series

Even though Waseem played great, the UAE lost their second game in a row in the tri-series. They were trying to catch up to 189 runs but ended up 38 runs short.

After the game, Waseem said he was bummed he couldn’t wrap things up:

“Not happy with my work because I could not finish the game. We keep leaking runs in the last ten overs. We will take positives, but also need to work on restricting boundaries in the death overs,” Waseem said in the post-match presentation.

The UAE bowlers had a tough time again near the end, giving up too many runs. This meant the batters had a lot to catch up on.

UAE What Is The Future T20 Asia Cup 2025?.

UAE are next facing Pakistan and Afghanistan in the tri-series before moving to the T20 Asia Cup 2025.

Group A of the tournament has been UAE are thrown in with India, Oman, and Pakistan.

Their first match will be against Suryakumar Yadav-led India at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10, 2025.

After Waseem’s explosive inning, the UAE will be looking to cause a few big shocks in the continental tournament.

The stunning innings by Muhammad Waseem represents a new era of UAE cricket. While he has eclipsed masters of the game like Rohit Sharma, Martin Guptill, and Kane Williamson, he also has put himself on the map as one of the most dangerous T20 batters in the world.

If he continues to perform at his level, the day is not that far away when Waseem could steal Rohit’s all-time six-hitting record in T20Is. For now, though, the UAE fans will be hoping that the Waseem’s brilliance can convert to victories in their pocket ahead of the Asia Cup 2025.
