“Virat Kohli Once Called Me Lazy”: Mohammed Shami’s Honest Take Will Surprise Fans

Mohammed Shami Opens Up on Virat Kohli: From ‘Lazy’ Jibes

Mohammed Shami, the pace spearhead for India, recently provided an unfiltered look at the relationship between him and former Indian captain, Virat Kohli, full of joviality, honesty, and emotion. During a guest appearance on the popular show Aap Ki Adalat, Shami explained how Kohli labelled him “lazy” shortly after he joined the team, how he struggles to speak in English while on overseas tours, and a very touching moment when he received the good news of his mother’s health with Kohli.

Shami Talks About Virat Kohli Calling Him Lazy

Kohli joked that Shami was lazy because he naps during massages. The fast bowler just laughed it off. He said fast bowling is killer on the body, so he needs those little rests.

“Fast bowling is the toughest job in the team. We run the most, respond to situations instantly, and naturally our bodies need recovery. If I relax a bit and Virat calls me lazy, I don’t mind,” Mohammed Shami said.

He took it all in good fun, which shows the team gets along great, even with the teasing.

Shami’s Struggles with English

Knowing the humor of the situation, Shami nevertheless related a funny story from the Indian team’s trip to New Zealand. As he could not understand the Kiwi accent, he asked Kohli to help him as a translator, but the result was that he got even more confused.

“I joked that I brought Virat with me for translation. After I spoke in English, Virat asked why I needed him there at all,” Mohammed Shami recalled with laughter.

This open and honest account from Shami, who was abroad dealing with language barriers but still managed to keep his composure and crack jokes.

When Virat Kohli Touched Shami’s Mother Feet

Through light-hearted joking and laughter, he explained a heartfelt personal story from the Champions Trophy. After a victory, Kohli decided to touch Shami’s mother’s feet, which moved the pacer to the extent of deep appreciation.

“Virat used to speak with my mom over the phone, but she never met him. When she came to the ground, I introduced her to Virat, and he touched my mom’s feet. That’s why I always respect him,” Mohammed Shami explained.

This moment exemplified Kohli’s relationship to his teammates and beliefs beyond cricket.

Shami’s Return Before Australia ODIs

Fans have been following these stories, but Shami hasn’t been on India’s team since March 2025 because of an injury. He’s hoping to make a big return in the next Australia ODIs, where he might play with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma again.

If he gets back in shape, Shami’s speed and know-how would be a big plus for India before the important ICC tournaments in 2026.

Through their casual humorous dressing room chit-chat to their touching real-life actions, the Shami-Kohli relationship has been giving cricket lovers an insight into the human side of cricket. Though Kohli’s ‘lazy’ jibe elicited grins from everyone, the incident of him physically connecting with Shami’s mother to show his respect was the narrative that Indian cricket fraternity being defined by brotherhood and mutual respect was evident.

While Mohammed Shami is getting ready for his return, supporters would love to see more such motivating tales not only of the ground but also of the outside world.
