Jofra Archer’s Shock Test Recall: Why India Should Be Seriously Worried Ahead of Edgbaston Clash
After a lengthy and lengthy absence from red-ball cricket, Jofra Archer’s return to England’s Test squad is one of the most newsworthy stories ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston. After a poor showing in Leeds, India finds itself in a pivotal series situation trailing 0–1 and with Archer potentially making the difference.
The pace sensation- now 30-was selected for the squad after a successful return for Sussex in the County Championship. His raw pace, bounce and swing potential could prove to be the difference against a wounded Indian batting order still stinging from their collapse at Headingley.
England’s High-Stakes Gamble with Jofra Archer
Despite the fanfare surrounding Jofra Archer’s return, it has not been without controversy. The England management has taken a risk, bringing him back so quickly following one red-ball outing with no injuries. Archer bowled 18 overs against Durham – the first red-ball appearance in over three years and five surgeries.
Even Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace was not completely on board saying England should wait until the third Test as they did not want to tinker with a winning team. But England selectors decided they could not wait to use this weapon anymore – particularly when conditions at the venue tend to favour faster bowlers who can swing and seam the ball.

Selection Headache for England
Archer is the sole new name in an England team that had a good experience at Headingley. The selectors have a difficult decision to make. The batting unit looks good so one of the bowlers is likely to miss out – most likely Josh Tongue.
Chris Woakes only took one wicket, however, his experience playing at Edgbaston and local knowledge may see him elevated. It would be a hard decision to choose to drop Tongue as he caused trouble to India’s lower order in both innings, however, the selection of Archer could be a decisive factor in either levelling the series or allowing it to slip.
India Must Brace for the Jofra Archer Storm
From India’s perspective, Archer’s comeback is ominous. Archer’s natural speed and accuracy are perfect for English conditions and with the Dukes ball, those bouncers will be sharp Municipal pressure.
Although Jofra Archer only has played two Tests against India the threat is real. The Indian Middle order striggled in the first Test n Archer’s inclusion adds variety by giving options to his teammates Brydon Brittany Carsey Chris Woakes welcoming Joe Roots occasional spin. Failing to adapt could mean that India find itself under yet more pressure for a collapse.
Jofra Archer’s return is no coincidence. With India currently on the back foot, England is taking the psychological edge. A number of pundits, including Mike Atherton, have advised prudence. But even he can see that this spike is possibly the moment to put England’s foot down hard.
It matters not whether Archer plays a full role or is simply used in bite-sized spells to rattle batters. His presence alone changes the story. If England win at Edgbaston, what is seen as a bold call could be the watershed moment in this Test series in 2025.
