IPL Orange Cap Winners List (2008–2025)
The Orange Cap is a big deal in the Indian Premier League. Each year, it goes to the player who scores the most runs. It shows who the best, most steady, and most commanding batter was in the T20 season. Since the start in 2008, some really great IPL batters have won it, from Shaun Marsh to Sai Sudharsan.

The Rise of Greatness: Shaun Marsh (2008)
The very first season of the IPL in 2008 saw Kings XI Punjab’s Shaun Marsh claiming the first Orange Cap. Yes, his 616 runs in 11 innings from a mean of 61.6 and strike rate of 139.93, plus his top score of 115, was consistently brilliant and indicated the start of what the Orange Cap would come to mean for excellence in performance.
Aussie Power Continues: Matthew Hayden (2009)
After that, Hayden was brilliant with the bat and hit runs all over the place. He scored 572 runs from 12 innings with an amazing strike rate of 144.84. With his blazing batting and supreme power at the top, CSK became a juggernaut.
The Magic of the Master Blaster: Sachin Tendulkar (2010)
Sachin Tendulkar, the God of Cricket, showed his class in T20 in 2010.
He scored 618 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.33 with a strike rate of 119.46. Tendulkar winning the Orange Cap is one of IPL’s most iconic moments.
Chris Gayle: The Gayle Storm of 2011 & 2012
When you think of IPL legends, Chris Gayle is definitely up there. He was on another level in 2011 and 2012.
He snagged the Orange Cap in both years, racking up 608 runs in 2011 and then 733 runs in 2012. What’s more, he did it with insane hitting power, boasting rates of 147.82 and 160.91. His massive sixes and aggressive batting changed how T20 cricket was played.
Consistency King: Michael Hussey (2013)
In addition to this, an Australian named Michael Hussey got the Orange Cap in 2013, scoring 733 runs in 17 matches with a batting average of 54.85. His calm demeanor and classic strokes played a big part in Chennai’s regular wins throughout the year.
The Indian Touch: Robin Uthappa (2014)
Robin Uthappa was central to Kolkata Knight Riders’ title run in 2014.
He scored 660 runs in 14 matches for an average of 46.43 and strike rate of 130.71, punctuating innings with flexibility and poise.
Warner Era Begins: David Warner (2015, 2017, 2019)
The Orange Cap truly found its king in David Warner, who claimed it three times in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
- 2015: 562 runs (Avg 56.20, SR 139.60)
- 2017: 641 runs (Avg 58.27, SR 141.41)
- 2019: 692 runs (Avg 69.20, SR 143.41)
His aggressive starts and consistency made him one of IPL’s greatest openers ever.
Virat Kohli: A Royal Record-Breaker (2016 & 2024)
Back in 2016, Virat Kohli had an unbelievable IPL season. He scored 973 runs in 16 games, averaging 81.08 with a strike rate of 152.03. That’s still the best batting performance anyone’s ever had in the IPL.
Then, in 2024, Kohli won the Orange Cap again, scoring 741 runs in 15 games. It just goes to show that he’s still got it!
The Kiwi Captain’s Class: Kane Williamson (2018)
Kane Williamson proved his mettle with sublime stroke play and calmness of mind, amassing 735 runs in 15 games at a whopping average of 73.50 and maintaining a strike rate of 139.02 was outstanding as SRH reached the final.
Indian Dominance: KL Rahul (2020 & 2021)
KL Rahul’s consistency and style earned him back-to-back Orange Cap titles in 2020 and 2021.
- 2020: 670 runs (Avg 55.83, SR 129.34)
- 2021: 626 runs (Avg 62.60, SR 138.80)
- He blended aggression with control, becoming the backbone of Punjab’s batting lineup.
Jos the Boss: Jos Buttler (2022)
Jos Buttler had an insane IPL season in 2022. He hammered 863 runs in 17 games, averaging 57.53 with a strike rate of 163.69. He even smashed four centuries! His incredible play drove the Rajasthan Royals all the way to the finals.
Gujarat’s Gem: Shubman Gill (2023)
Shubman Gill came out as the shining example of the Indian batting line-up’s brilliance and made a memento of himself by compiling 890 runs in 17 innings with 129 as his highest score. Along with his average of 59.33 and strike rate of 156.14, he showed pure class and certainty that he had more than 20 years of cricket ahead of him.
2024 – Virat Kohli
Kohli reclaimed the Orange Cap with 741 runs in 15 matches, highest 92*, averaging 61.75 and striking at 154.69.
The Next Big Thing: Sai Sudharsan 2025
Sai Sudharsan amazed everyone with 759 runs in 15 matches, an average of 54.21 and a strike rate of 156.17. His cool demeanor and shot selection make him a rising talent to watch.
