IPL 2025: New Rules EXPLAINED | The Last One Will Shock You

Ahead of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), which begins on March 22, the BCCI has made a few tweaks to the laws while preserving certain current rules to boost interest around the world’s wealthiest T20 franchise competition.

The IPL 2025 season began in Kolkata with the defending champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. On March 20, all of the captains and management of the ten IPL teams met at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

Here are the exact rules and regulations for the IPL 2025.

Saliva ban lifted

Bowlers will be relieved to know that they will be permitted to put saliva on the ball in the IPL 2025. The saliva ban was first implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to help prevent the disease from spreading.

No match bans for slow over-rates

No captain will receive a match ban for sluggish over-rates. Instead, the skipper will be fined and given demerit points for sluggish over-rates. For a Level 1 offense, a captain will face a penalty of 25 to 75 percent of match fees, as well as demerit points. A Level 2 infraction will result in four demerit points.

The match referee has the authority to apply a penalty of 100% fine or extra demerit points for every four demerit points accumulated. These demerit points might result in a future match suspension. Notably, demerit points will be carried forward for three years.

More use of Decision-Review System

Players will now have the option to request a DRS for height-based no-balls and wides outside the off-stump. There have been various problems with height-based no-balls and wides beyond the off-stump in previous years, and with DRS in place, umpires in the IPL 2025 will be able to make more precise rulings.

Impact Player rule to stay till IPL 2027

The Impact Player regulation, which has sparked outrage among bowlers and a few experts, is set to remain in place until the IPL 2027, at least. According to Cricbuzz, at the BCCI meeting, it was announced that the organizers will examine it after IPL 2027.

Second Ball rule in IPL 2025

The inclusion of a second ball is the most recent change to the IPL 2025 regulations. To counteract the effects of dew in night matches, the bowling side may choose a second ball after the 11th over of the second innings if the umpires judge it necessary. This regulation does not apply to afternoon matches, which begin at 3:30 PM IST.
