How Sanjog Gupta an Indian Media Tycoon Beat 2500 Applicants to Become ICC’s New CEO

Indian media tycoon Sanjog Gupta was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Jay Shah-led International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday after a detailed recruitment process that started in March this year.

Gupta, previously the CEO (Sports & Live Experiences) at JioStar, will assume his new responsibilities right away.

The ICC announced that it received over 2,500 applications from 25 nations, with 12 candidates selected for the shortlist. Sanjog Gupta, the current CEO of sports and live experiences at JioStar, will assume the role of the ICC’s seventh CEO on July 7, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who resigned from the position in January this year after initially taking on the role in an interim capacity in 2020 and then full-time in 2021.

How Sanjog Gupta Became ICC CEO

Candidates ranged from leaders associated with sport’s governing bodies to senior corporate executives from across sectors,” the ICC said.

The nominations were sent to the Nominations Committee, which includes ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja, ECB chairman Richard Thompson, SLC president Shammi Silva, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

They suggested Gupta for the position. The ICC chairman Jay Shah subsequently endorsed the suggestion, which was confirmed by the entire ICC board.

“I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket’s evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC Member Boards to build on our strong foundations,” Gupta stated in an ICC release

Jay Shah’s Opinion on Sanjog Gupta

“I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC,” Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, said in a statement.

His extensive knowledge of the worldwide sports and M&E landscape, along with his ongoing interest in the cricket fan’s viewpoint and enthusiasm for technology, will be crucial to our goal of expanding the game in the years ahead.
