The European Cup, which was the precursor to the UEFA Champions League, was a simple knockout competition that started in 1955. During the first five years, the teams that took part were selected by the French football magazine L’Equipe.

Spanish clubs have won the tournament a staggering 20 times, and they are the undisputed monarchs. English clubs come second, having won the title 14 times, while Italian clubs have won the tournament 12 times.

10. Porto (2).
