Kylian Mbappe refuses guard of honour: El Clasico Controversy After Super Cup Final

After Real Madrid’s 3–2 loss to Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, Kylian Mbappe sparked a lot of debate around the rivalry and respect between teams with a viral video showing how he was celebrating right after the final whistle blew.

Mbappe has become a focal point of this ongoing debate because of his behaviour after the match was over. In recent years, many people have praised players for displaying good sportsmanship, during and after El Clasico matches. These two clubs have been extremely competitive over the last decade or more, but this latest incident has raised questions about whether or not they are still maintaining that level of respect for each other on the field of play.

There’s video going around that seems to show France’s star player telling his Real Madrid teammates to move away while Barcelona players clapped for them as they went to get their medals. Madrid didn’t clap back, which is something they usually do to show respect.

Fans online were quick to jump on this, with many saying the player was purposely not clapping because he was annoyed. He seemed upset after the loss, which shows things are getting tense for Real Madrid when they play Barcelona in important games.

With Sunday’s loss, that’s now three finals in a row that Real Madrid has lost to Barcelona, making the team’s mood even worse.

A Tough Night for Mbappe on the Pitch

Mbappe’s own showing provided few reprieves. The 25-year-old had been a major doubt for the final due to a knee problem but still made the trip with the squad and was brought on as a second-half substitute.

Even with his introduction, Real Madrid still had trouble prying control back from a disciplined Barcelona squad. Mbappe, for his part, just couldn’t really make a decisive impact, as Barcelona expertly managed the closing stages to see out the win.

Super Cup Final Lived Up to El Clasico Hype

In what can only be described as a spectacular finale, the match itself created suspense that was befitting of an event of this magnitude. Barcelona took the lead first when Raphinha scored a goal at 36 minutes. However, Vinicius Junior quickly equalised for Real Madrid when he scored with an incredible run down the field all by himself.

Following that, Robert Lewandowski recaptured Barcelona’s advantage just minutes later. However, just minutes before halftime, Gonzalo Garcia drew the match even again as both teams went into the halftime break with a score of 2-2.

The defining moment of this final came in the second half when Raphinha scored with another long shot that was redirected into the net off an opposing player resulting in a goal that allowed Barcelona to go ahead again. Barcelona then had to rely heavily on their defence for the remainder of the game as Real Madrid applied tremendous pressure in the closing minutes.

They were also forced to play with only ten players with Frenkie de Jong receiving a red card and adding to the pressure of losing to Real Madrid with Kylian Mbappé also coming onto the field late in the match.
