Australia announce squad for WTC Final, IPL teams are in trouble

Australia have announced a 15-man squad for the forthcoming month’s WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s, with all the usual suspects in the team. Mitchell Marsh was the sole loss from the Australian Test summer, with Beau Webster replacing the batting all-rounder.

Whereas Cameron Green has returned from a lengthy banishment from the game and more specifically, international cricket. Sam Konstas has been retained as the cover opener with Marnus Labuschagne set to take the opening position in the single final.

“The side completed the WTC cycle with a superb series win in Sri Lanka after an equally solid summer in beating India for the first time in a decade,” said selection panel chair George Bailey.

“Those series completed a steady performance throughout the two-year cycle and now gives us the incredibly thrilling challenge of defending the World Test Championship.”.

“It’s big for the squad to get as far as they have and they’re very excited about facing whatever South Africa are going to serve up at Lord’s.”

Australia came in second with a points percentage of 67.54 after a 3-1 win in the Border-Gavaskar series against India at home, topped by a whitewash in Sri Lanka which Cummins and Hazlewood missed and Smith took the place of the regular captain.

Sean Abbott and Michael Neser, Australia’s reserve pacers last season have not been named and South Australia’s Brendan Doggett is the only uncapped member in the squad, who has been named as a travelling reserve.

The resumption schedule for the rest of the IPL 2025 season was announced by the BCCI while Cricket Australia (CA) has left it up to the players to determine the future direction as the IPL concludes, only a week ahead of the WTC final, which is scheduled to start on June 11.
