Andre Russell made history by putting a dismal run of form behind him during the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) one-run triumph over Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Russell scored a half-century and set a new world record during his innings.

Russell, who had only scored 72 runs in seven innings prior to today’s game, was promoted to number five in the batting order and stepped out to bat with more than seven overs remaining. The great all-rounder had a cautious start, scoring only two runs in the first nine balls, before delivering a magnificent effort to delight the home fans.

The 37-year-old concluded with 57 runs in only 25 balls, including four boundaries and six sixes, as KKR posted a mammoth 206 on the board.

Russell scored 1000 runs at Eden Gardens during his knock in both T20 cricket and the IPL. He is the third player to accomplish the feat at the renowned stadium, following Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. The West Indies star is the 18th player in IPL history to reach the milestone at the same venue.

Overall, 168 T20 cricket players have scored 1000 runs at a single location, with Russell currently holding the global record for doing so with the best strike rate. He is the only player to reach 1000 runs in both T20 cricket and the IPL, with a scoring rate of more than 170. He broke an IPL record held by Suryakumar Yadav.

Russell played for the Delhi Capitals (formerly the Delhi Daredevils) in 2012 and 2013 before joining the Knight Riders in 2014 and remaining with the organisation ever since. Except for the 2016 T20 World Cup final, where he made one run in West Indies’ historic victory over England, he has played all of his T20 appearances at Eden Gardens while representing the three-time IPL champions.
