After Digvesh Rathi, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant, was fined Rs 12 lakh for sustaining a slow over-rate during his team’s 12-run victory against the Mumbai Indians in an IPL match here on Saturday.
Why was Digvesh Rathi fined?
LSG’s trump card, Digvesh Rathi, has been fined 50% of his match earnings for the second time in a row for violating the IPL’s Level-1 code of conduct.
Rathi was also penalized half of his match money for his extravagant wicket-taking celebration against Punjab Kings batsman Priyansh Arya.
What did Digvesh do to celebrate?
On Friday, everything was quiet, but Digvesh did another notebook tick celebration after dismissing MI’s Naman Dhir.
“This was his second Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated Two Demerit Points, in addition to One Demerit Point which he accumulated during LSG’s match against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025,” the press release added.
Why was Pant punished?
The time limit for a bowling team to complete 20 overs is 90 minutes. Pant’s LSG was running low after the 19th over, forcing it to maintain one less fielder beyond the 30-yard circle.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 Lakh,” a BCCI news release said.
Will a buildup of slow overrates result in a suspension?
No, according to the IPL’s new rule change, captains will not face match suspensions for sluggish over-rate accumulation. Instead, skippers will incur penalty points based on the gravity of the infraction. These points will be valid for three years.
